Earlier this week, Buzzfeed posted a video on their Youtube channel titled If Women’s Roles in Ads Were Played By Men. The video features various commercials, but as the title says, switches the gender roles in the advertisements, to give a quick look into the sexualization and objectification of women (and men) in society. The commercials are deconstructed and presented similar to The LAMP’s commercial remix innovation, where participants are given the opportunity to speak out against stereotypes in media, criticize below-the-belt marketing techniques and demand responsibility from an advertising industry regulated only by itself. The Buzzfeed video demonstrates a method of media literacy activism, where consumers are given a voice within advertising industry to speak up on the fight for realistic portrayals in commercial advertisements.
