Summer Field Trip Living – July Round Up!

By August 17, 2018 News No Comments

This week marks the last week for many of our Summer programs, including our activities with the Summer Youth Employment Program. The LAMP programs through CareerClue offer NYC-based high school students with media literacy fundamentals, career exploration, and personal development, and service learning projects. Field trips provide a means to learn from professional media experts to explore career paths, practical applications of their studies, and ideas for next steps to achieve similar successes. The LAMP’s July trips were eye-opening and exciting, and be sure to check back for August highlights coming soon!

NYIT

Both of our CareerCLUE classes visited the NYIT Research Library during their first week! Highlights were the Robotics Study Room, 3D-Printers, and the fantastic staff who shared some tips for narrowing down an online search. (E.g. how to use google to search within websites and searching by file or URL type.) These tools were later used by the students to find graphics resources and build skills to develop their portfolio.

HelloFresh

Our class at Cypress Hills Collegiate Preparatory visited HelloFresh during their second week of programming, which offered a valuable glimpse into their marketing success. The group heard from a variety of staffers from the photography team, as well as the social media manager, marketing director, and a copywriter, to learn about the various skills needed to run a marketing campaign. (The props like fake ice cubes offered a helpful inside view!)  Students came away with valuable information and a new perspective on the length and cost of marketing for a large company, as well as the many paths they can take to build a successful career. (The salted chocolate chip cookies were also delicious!)

MSNBC

Our CareerCLUE students from East Bronx Academy for the Future visited the MSNBC studios at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The group toured various floors and studios to see what a day in the life of a media professional looks like. They also heard from guest speakers and met the NBC Pages to hear more about that program. Guest speakers shared their day to day operations and how they landed their careers at MSNBC. It was an inspiring day for young learners to start planning for their dream jobs!

The Skimm

Cypress Hills Collegiate Preparatory students also had the opportunity to visit the dynamic office of The Skimm. (We won’t be surprised if there are a number of internship applications already!) While at The Skimm, they toured the space, heard a from a diverse and informative panel from their editorial, social media, and video staff, and participants asked great questions about their paths to success. Lastly, they broke into groups to craft their social media posts through the lens of a staffer at The Skimm.

Facebook

One of The LAMP’s dedicated Associate Board Members generously hosted a group of students from the East Bronx Academy for a visit to Facebook. (Yes, they were VERY excited to learn that Instagram’s magic happens there too!) The energizing tour was followed by an interactive group activity in which students helped to think through ways to minimize fake news on Facebook, as well as a deliciously plentiful lunch. As the group departed, we overhead Hamza referred to as “mad cool.” We agree, of course.
