What if your daily commutes were filled with art instead of advertisements? That’s one of the big ideas behind NO AD, an augmented-reality mobile app from Re+Public, a team of artists and activists which includes The LAMP’s friend Jordan Seiler of PublicAdCampaign.
All of us at The LAMP are proponents of reclaiming media. Maybe you’ll remix something to make it your own, like with the MediaBreaker, or maybe you’re asking critical questions to filter out messages that are harmful or misleading. NO AD also challenges us to be critical of media and expand our ideas about how they impact our daily lives. Art Everywhere does something similar by replacing billboards and other ad spaces with works of art, but whereas those pieces will come down, NO AD has no contract with an ad space provider, and is an opportunity for emerging artists to get their work out into the world.
