The point of this broken AllState commercial featuring their Mayhem character is clear: Assumptions aren’t fair, and they’re often wrong if not also harmful. They may be used for humor, but isn’t there another way to sell car insurance without asserting that a young girl driving is Mayhem incarnate?
In addition, this video takes the LAMPlatoon commercial-breaking format to a new level. Instead of one perspective talking back to the commercial, we see what happens when a girl and a boy get into a discussion about what’s really happening. The boy is skeptical that the commercial is saying anything offensive about girls or teens, but the girl sees a few things he doesn’t. The ensuing dialogue (and drama) plays out a scene familiar to anyone who has ever argued whether something is or isn’t racist/sexist/ageist or otherwise skewed toward stereotypical assumptions.
